A Rite of Passage
A Rite of Passage quickly followed Wayward Home as a follow up on having a representational space erupt within a matrix of hand-painted circles as an analogy to a sensation I sometimes have that the world is made of solid light. This is a major reason I have chosen painting as a medium.
There is something that attracts me to this horizontal band crossing the picture plane: the horizon is obscured by a fence and neighbouring houses, trees. At the same time, these circles seem to transcend the boundaries represented in the image. Or the circles transport me to a necessary elsewhere.
Whenever I enter elements from photos, I shift the composition in order to align with the rhythms of the matrix of circles. I love the rhythms of the composition that somehow reflect the rhythms of generations of family that lend me a sense of belonging.
