I

The video, I, features an endurance-performance of dancer Emma Waltraud Howes, who studied the particularities of headbanging styles. The result is a 21-minute video shot in one continuous take without any effects or editing in postproduction that follows the event by focusing solely on the shadows of the dancer’s body thrown by coloured spotlights. The isolation of the shadow(s) of the dancer allows one to take up this cathartic performance in the same way anyone can cast a shadow (or use the pronoun “I”). Heavy metal culture is distanced here from its association with masculinity and violence and presented as a sublime and ornate form of resistance to the common utility of modern aesthetics.
