The video, I, features an endurance-performance by a dancer reenacting the particularities of headbanging styles. The result is a 21-minute video shot in one continuous take without any effects or editing in postproduction, focusing solely on the shadows of the dancer’s body thrown by coloured spotlights. The isolation of the shadow(s) of the dancer allows one to take up this cathartic performance in the same way anyone can cast a shadow or use the pronoun “I”. Heavy metal culture is suspended here from its association with masculinity and violence and presented as a sublime and ornate form of resistance to the common utility of modern aesthetics.
