Untitled (Rhythmic Forms)

Untitled (Rhythmic Forms) was originally a text painting that I reworked to remove the letters and replace them with linear forms that arise from linking intersection points in the matrix of hand painted circles. I have been looking for ways to continue to work with circles and geometry that do not rely so much on the use of tools to make the forms more precise in the mathematical sense. The use of colour is also meant to underscore the powerful effect that line and colour can make in the process of discernment and discrimination. I consider all of the works produced in this manner to be experiments in intersectionality: a matrix (of circles) is the underlying structure, their colouration creates effects that allow the circles to participate in additional forms of relation. All this sounds rather dry, I realize, but, of course, I am choosing colours that move me and my eye toward related emotions to the joys and assertions that go along with belonging and differentiation.

Lastly, this work, like the majority of the works made in this manner, does not have a ‘proper’ orientation: the painting produces interesting and beautiful effects whichever way it is hung on the wall.
