Forest Ablaze

Forest Ablaze is a work in which I am feeling heartsick over the effects of global warming and human exploitation on the forests of my homeland, Canada, but also, more generally, the world over. The summer this year in Northern Germany hasn’t been very warm. I miss the smell of the hot summer sun backing the sap of pine trees while they gently sway in the wind. I also wanted to revisit the compositional rhythms of Brutalist Sunset but with a full-chromatic palette of intense greens – a colour I haven’t worked a lot with until more recently.

The recent works arise from a more associative desire, mostly in palette and an interplay of textures, patterns and rhythms; they lean more and more heavily toward representation, but I want to resist straightforward likenesses for reasons that are unclear to me for the moment.
