Brutalist Cityscape

Brutalist Cityscape is a very pictorial work that uses a mixture of compositional strategies. The forms are more rigorously related to the matrix of circles than West Coast Memory, for example, however, I do push the quadruple matrix in terms of colour to create areas in the pattern of circles that seem to disintegrate. I went through many colour combinations, particularly for the sun, before resting with a flat, hot orange ball of fire for the central character of the work.

Oddly, Norbert Schwontowski was in my head, particularly his scenes of industrial sites but also the warm and friendly social scenes of people gathered together to party in ambiguous outdoor settings. I realize it sounds crazy for me to say this, as my work is so technical and busy compared to the ease and quiet presence of paint as a vehicle of the imagination in his works. When I do arrive at a simplicity at all comparable to Schwontowski, it will be on my own terms (as it is plain to see in these works).
